[texts]Bistatic radar sea state monitoring - Ruck, G. T.
Bistatic radar techniques were examined for remote measurement of the two-dimensional surface wave height spectrum of the ocean. One technique operates at high frequencies (HF), 3-30 MHz, and the other at ultrahigh frequencies (UHF), approximately 1 GHz. Only a preliminary theoretical examination of the UHF technique was performed; however the principle underlying the HF technique was demonstrated experimentally with results indicating that an HF bistatic system using a surface transmitter and a...

[texts]Laboratory and observational study of the interrelation of the carbonaceous component of interstellar dust and solar system materials - Allamandola, L. J.
By studying the chemical and isotopic composition of interstellar ice and dust, one gains insight into the composition and chemical evolution of the solid bodies in the solar nebula and the nature of the material subsequently brought into the inner part of the solar system by comets and meteorites. It is now possible to spectroscopically probe the composition of interstellar ice and dust in the mid-infrared, the spectral range which is most diagnostic of fundamental molecular vibrations...

[texts]Evolutionary Concepts for Decentralized Air Traffic Flow Management - Adams, Milton
Alternative concepts for modifying the policies and procedures under which the air traffic flow management system operates are described, and an approach to the evaluation of those concepts is discussed. Here, air traffic flow management includes all activities related to the management of the flow of aircraft and related system resources from 'block to block.' The alternative concepts represent stages in the evolution from the current system, in which air traffic management decision making is l...

A system of buffered gelled water was developed to prevent and control fires from small spills of nitrogen tetroxide-(N2O4)-Aerozine 50-hypergolic fuel. Laboratory studies on various alkalis, buffers, and seavengers for the fuel components are described. Chilling and sodium acetate-acetic acid buffer was found to be the best additives to the gelled water. Field tests and a delivery system (airborne) for the extinguishant are described...

[texts]High pressure turbine blade stress analysis - Vannimwegen, R. R.
Combinations of high temperature gradients associated with strong transients in both temperature and rotational speed fields are discussed. Blade definition and results of the analysis are shown. Since the same model should later be used to define some dynamic characteristics and certain areas would require a nonlinear analysis, NASTRAN was chosen as a convenient program to manage the several alternatives.

We were able to establish that the northern source Sgr B2(N) has a flux density of only 1.5 kJy at 50 microns, compared to 4.3 kJy for Sgr B2(M), the 'main' source...

[texts]Energy flow in electromagnetic wave fields - Landstorfer, H.
Methods of calculating instantaneous and average energy flows and a newly defined concept of energy velocity are used in place of the conventional Maxwellian field strength method of characterizing the behavior of electromagnetic fields. The approach is applied to waveguides, providing an interpretation of dispersion and vortex phenomena, and to rod antennas, providing an interpretation of their near field patterns and effective areas.

[texts]Hematological and immunological analyses - Taylor, G. R
The analyses conducted on the cellular blood components of the primary and backup crewmembers indicated that for the one month period preceding the flight, there were no unusual variations in the cellular blood components of the crewmembers. However, there were alterations in both of the primary crewmembers after the flight. The explanation is that there was a phase decrease in fluid volume. Concomitant with this fluid imbalance there is also evidence to support an absolute decrease in mean eryt...

[texts]Modelling Epsilon Aurigae without solid particles - Cheng, A. Y. S.
Three components can be expected to contribute to the emission of epsilon Aurigae. There is a primary F star. There is an opaque disk which occults it, and there is a gas stream which is observed to produce absorption lines. Evidence that the disk is not responsible for the gas stream lines comes both from the radial velocities, which are too small, and from the IR energy distribution out of eclipse, which shows free-free emission that would produce inadequate optical depth in electron scatterin...

Crew performance is outlined. No medical problems of any kind were experienced by the crew. No medical treatment inflight was required except for the prophylactic use of an antimotion sickness medication that had been planned preflight.

[texts]The Elastic Response of the Earth to Interannual Variations in Antarctic Precipitation - Hager, Bradford H.
Measurements of elastic displacements of the bedrock surrounding large ice sheets have been proposed as a means to detect mass changes in these ice sheets. However, accumulation of glacial mass on the ice sheets is a noisy process, subject to large spatial and temporal variations in precipitation. We simulated the response of the Antarctic continent to a stochastic model of interannual precipitation variations and found that interannual variations in the elastic response of the earth are large w...

An experimental investigation was conducted on a 5-degree half-angle cone and a 5-degree half-angle flared cone in a conventional Mach 6 wind tunnel to examine the effects of facility noise on boundary layer transition. The influence of tunnel noise was inferred by comparing transition onset locations determined from the present test to that previously obtained in a Mach 6 low disturbance quiet tunnel...
